Lamai Serengeti Camp

Lamai Serengeti is tucked amongst the rocks of Kogakuria Kopje with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Only a few miles away is where the wildebeest herds cross the Mara River. Between late July and October, this is where you will find the migration. For the rest of the year, it is wild Serengeti, with all the resident game of the Masai Mara but without the people.

Experience the Serengeti from this extraordinary vantage point. Big game, big views, big Africa. Each room makes the very best of incredible views, space and light, while being sensitively designed and placed so as to be perfectly camouflaged against the natural backdrop. See, but not be seen. The panoramic views from every corner of Lamai Serengeti of the Serengeti and Masai Mara beyond deliver impact from the moment you arrive.

Stay at Lamai Serengeti Camp

Lamai Serengeti is the perfect base for year-round, Big Five game viewing. July to October sees the plains around Lamai Serengeti teeming with the wildebeest migration. Just 20 minutes from the Mara River, the camp is superbly placed for river crossings. November to June has a different kind of magic when the incredible resident game comes into its own. Lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant and rhino are never far away. At this time, the majority of other tourists are chasing the migration further south, leaving this lush, green landscape blissfully peaceful.

Each of the rooms is designed to fit into the complex geometry of the kopje to make the most of this sensational location, its views and its natural space and light. The rooms are a blend of canvas, plaster and natural poles.

You can see from this outcrop, the Kogakuria Kopje, for miles and miles. Over a million wildebeest cross these plains on their way to dodge the jaws of death in the Mara River, just down the track. On the Lamai Wedge, bristling with mammals all year round, there’s never a dull moment. Above it all, our beautiful kopje is a sacred wildlife haven – and our mission is to act as its faithful guardians.

Accommodation

Accommodation at Lamai Serengeti Camp

With 12 spacious rooms in total, Lamai Serengeti is split into two separate camps of varying size. The smaller Private Camp has a maximum of five rooms, but requires a minimum booking of just two, while Main Camp uses the remaining 7–10 rooms. For groups of up to ten travelling together, Lamai also has an entirely self-contained property, Mkombe's House Lamai, which lies on the other side of the kopje and has its own kitchen and team of staff.

All the rooms at Main Camp are nestled right between the kopjes. It's clear that a lot of thought has gone into positioning them to maximise privacy, while allowing each a spectacular sunrise or sunset view. On our most recent visit in October 2018, we didn't even notice the room next to us until we were leaving, it was so well hidden! The placement of the rooms amongst the large boulders of the kopje means that it can be a bit of a hike from the main area. The walkways are quite steep in places, with lots of steps, and the altitude can be felt. Room no. 5 is the closest to the main areas, with the fewest steps, so would be the most suitable for those with limited mobility. However taken slowly, the paths are quite manageable and you are rewarded by the incredible views and privacy of the rooms.

The Experience

Experience Lamai Serengeti Camp

Nomad Lamai Serengeti lies in the far north of Tanzania's Serengeti National Park, just south of the border with Kenya. It's set high up in the beautiful Kogakuria Kopjes, with views out towards the Mara River Valley and the Lamai Wedge. Between July and October the camp has a prime position for the great wildebeest migration, and is close enough to the Mara River for guests to witness river crossings.

Between July and October, when the Serengeti's wildebeest migration is usually (but not always) in the area around the camp, the game viewing can be phenomenal. A real highlight is to try to observe one of the great 'river crossings'. The Mara River in this area is deep, permanent and fast-flowing, so watching hundreds, and often thousands, of animals swimming across – whilst trying not to get swept away or fall victim to the river's huge crocodiles – is a truly spectacular sight. You'll often need patience to see such an event, but it's well worth waiting for.

Activities

Things to do at Lamai Serengeti Camp

  • Migration Crossings: This remote part of the Serengeti is bisected by the perilous Mara River, where once a year, between July and October, over a million-strong wildebeest and zebra throw themselves across its crocodile-infested waters, heading for where the grass is greener. This makes for spectacular predator and prey viewing on the banks in the late dry season.
  • Game Viewing: What is less known about this part of the Serengeti ecosystem are the very healthy concentrations of lion, leopard and buffalo to be seen all year round. With expert guides and rugged 4x4s, you’ll head out into the plains for big mammal discovery, and fantastic photographic opportunities.
  • Bush Walks: We love to walk and here we have a rare and special dispensation to do so in a national park. When the grass is short and safe to move through, we slip out of the lodge, where small valleys, river lines and rocky kopjes make for frequent changes of scenery...and provide perfect cover for approaching wild animals.
  • Honeymoons: For good guiding, excellent service, stunning views and a touch of luxury, Lamai Serengeti is the perfect choice for a Tanzania honeymoon. With each room cleverly tucked away, you'll enjoy the seclusion and privacy offered here, and either a sunrise or sunset view.
