Rufiji River Camp

Selous Game Reserve

Rufiji River Camp

Rufiji River Camp enjoys an enviable location high up on the banks of the Great Rufiji River. Spectacular sunsets are chorused by hippos grunting and a plethora of bird song.

Rufiji River Camp was redesigned in 2009 to compliment the perfect location on a promontory in the river bank. Built by local craftsmen, the Camp combines Makuti palm roofs with Selous sourced paving stones and farmed hard woods to create a beautiful and comfortable accommodation from which to enjoy the Selous Game Reserve. The shaded swimming pool is a great way to cool off between safari activitis.

The camp is rustic, but its location overlooking the Rufiji River is perfect! Sitting around the fire at night with the sounds of hippos in the river below made the stay very exciting!

Stay at Rufiji River Camp

Situated in the north-eastern region of the vast Selous Game Reserve and overlooking the mighty Rufiji River, this permanent tented camp offers the highest possible level of comfort while remaining close to nature. Ideal for a relaxed safari experience, Rufiji River Camp is situated high on a bank and offers incredible wildlife viewing - even from the individual tents.

Explore the area on 4x4 excursions, walking safaris and a boat trip along the Rufiji River - a definite trip highlight that will bring you to adjoining lakes where hippo, crocodile and 400 species of bird can be observed in the their natural habitat.

The camp itself is powered by solar panels, resulting in a minimal impact on the environment and offers a 270-degree view over the river and the plains beyond.

Accommodation

Accommodation at Rufiji River Camp

The tents are all pitched underneath thatched roofs with massive verandas giving views up and down the river. Each tent has an en suite bathroom, with solar heated water for showering. There are 11 individual classic individual tents well spaced along the river bank.

Rufiji has 3 suites, each with 2 large tents on a shared platform with private plunge pool. Each tent has it's own stylish bathroom. The suites are ideal for famillies or friends wanting some extra space and privacy or the extra touch for the special anniversay or honeymoon.

With the focus on the river views and wildlife, the restaurant and bar are built to reflect this. Al fresco dining lit by star light, private dinners along the river bank or that end of the evening coffee sipped from the depth of a sofa in the upper level coffee lounge - it can be difficult to choose!

The tents and main buidling are all have ramped access, but there is no specific adaptations in the tents. Plastic chairs can be provided for use in the shower and staff are always on hand to help as needed. Getting down to the boats may require some assistance as the path is steep with steps.

The Experience

Experience Rufiji River Camp

The central restaurant at Rufiji River Lodge is open-fronted and thatched with palm trees, offering a beautiful location in which to end off your days and relax during lunch time. Sit down to both exotic and traditional international meals, and treat yourself to something different like wild impala and warthog. The camp has a license to take a certain allocation of these each year, offering you a rare chance to try these delicacies.

The library offers a quiet, relaxing spot to curl up with one of the wildlife books or gaze out over the river. The covered swimming pool is situated between reception and mess area, creating a wonderful place to cool down and socialise during the lazy afternoons.2A

Things to do at Rufiji River Camp

  • Game Drives: All game drives are taken in open vehicles with a sun shade roof, so there are no impediments to anyone's view. Guides at Rufiji are locally trained and are experts in the Selous area.
  • Game Walks: A game walk at Rufiji will really open your eyes to the finer details often missed on game drives - the spore, footprints, the 'tillte five' representing the insect Kingdom are fascinating when evaluated and explained by your Walking guide.
  • Boating Safaris:Boating safaris in flat bottomed boats are perhaps the most relaxing way to game view. Sharing the river with pods of hippo and floats of crocodiles giving you the opportunity to view birds nesting in the banks, monitor lizards and many water birds are just some of the highlights.
