Stay at Kiba Point Selous
The Selous, marked as a UNESCO World Heritage site, is where Tanzanian elephants wander in a massive area, known to be larger than the entire country of Switzerland. Selous Game Reserve varies from savannah woodlands to mountainous regions, ebbed by the Rufiji River. This river gives life to much of the park through its extensive tributaries which form lakes, lagoons and channels.
Kiba Point is a self-contained annexe to nearby sister camp, Sand River Selous, and is situated on an outcrop of rock which has stunning views over the Rufiji River. This Tanzania bush camp in Selous is exclusive, taken on a private basis only and has four stone and thatch rooms with en suite facilities and a private plunge pool.
Kiba Point in Selous Game Reserve lies in close proximity to attractions such as Steigler's Gorge, Lake Tagalala and Beho Beho. There are daily flights to Kiba airstrip from Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Ruaha, Mafia, Pemba, and northern Tanzania. You will fly into the Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania, where you will land at Kiba airstrip. A short safari drive and you will arrive at your Selous game lodge in Tanzania. Alternatively, it is a 6-hour drive from Dar es Salaam depending on the weather and the state of the roads.
Accommodation at Kiba Point Selous
Accommodation at this bush camp in Tanzania is in 4 large, open-fronted rooms that boast unfiltered views of the surrounding natural environment. The bathrooms are spacious and open; with hot and cold running water, flush toilets, and an indoor and outdoor 'rock' shower.
Guests can spend afternoons relaxing in their private plunge pool. Alternatively, enjoy a refreshing drink by the shared pool by the main thatched area. This Selous safari accommodation in Tanzania is in airy cottages, made of stone and thatch, are raised up on platforms above the Rufiji River line. The interiors are cool with elegant, huge beds with softly draped mosquito nets, planters chairs and sun-beds for relaxing.
Each of the four rooms are spacious and open-fronted, with their own private plunge pool. In the communal areas, there is also a large pool and plenty of areas to relax around. The great draw of Kiba Point is that fact that you have total flexibility to set your own schedule. Just like Sand Rivers it is an up market, stylish and very comfortable safari camp, with plenty of space and excellent food and service.
The dining times for breakfast and lunch are completely flexible since Kiba Point has its own chefs, separate from the main Sand Rivers Camps. Breakfast usually consists of tea/coffee, fruit, cereals, toast and a cooked breakfast with eggs of your choice. Lunch is then a self-service buffet with plenty of salads, fresh vegetables and cold meats. There's an 'afternoon tea' at about 4pm – with tea, coffee, juices and delectable cakes.
Dinner has 3 courses with a choice for the main and is usually a mix of international cuisine. Dietary requirements can be easily catered for with prior notice. On our last visit in December 2009 we enjoyed spring rolls to start, chicken pasta with butternut squash for main, and a delicious coconut crème brulee for desert. Dining takes place in a variety of imaginative locations.
Experience Kiba Point Selous
If you are looking for an authentic safari experience under traditional canvas showcasing spacious views and enriching culture, Kiba Point Selous River Camp is the perfect choice.
Set within a 25,000-hectare concession area, Kiba Point Selous River Camp is located 3.5 km from the main entrance of the Tarangire National Park, overlooking a branch of the Tarangire River itself.
Nestled between the Maasai Steppe and the Great Rift Valley, Tarangire features the greatest concentration of wildlife outside the Serengeti. It is the distinct animal life of the park’s river that serves as the primary attraction. During the dry season, elephant dig deep into the riverbed while antelope congregate around shrinking water holes, closely followed by predatory animals like lion and leopard. Tarangire is also the country’s bird and baobab paradise.
