Sanctuary Ngorongoro
An absolute must-visit destination for any wildlife enthusiast visiting Tanzania, the Ngorongoro Crater is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa. The crater was formed around two to three million years ago, following a massive volcanic eruption. It is the world's largest inactive, unbroken and unfilled volcanic caldera, and hosts a diverse and concentrated population of wildlife including the big five.
The Sanctuary Ngorongoro enjoys a superlative location perched on the rim of the crater, close to the access road that leads to the crater floor. Location is key and this epic position allows our guests to beat the crowds and be among the first to reach the action in a journey that takes less than 15 minutes. From here, enjoy incredible access to the abundance of wildlife that calls the crater home, including zebra, buffalo, warthog, wildebeest, hippo, elephants, and a variety of predators – think lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs and even the elusive leopard.

Stay at Sanctuary Ngorongoro
Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater Camp boasts ten delightful canvas safari tents, each featuring an ultra-comfortable bed and its own fabulous en-suite bathroom, complete with hairdryers and plug points for added convenience. A boutique seating area is found in front of every tent, offering the perfect platform for morning coffee and biscuits before heading out for a day of exhilarating game viewing. The camp's common areas are equally inviting, with a dining area, bar and lounge, along with cosy sofas thoughtfully placed in various spots throughout.
The camp's setting in a gathering of acacia trees is akin to an enchanted forest; watch in awe as late afternoon light peeks through the woodland and a campfire crackles in front of the main lounge – it’s truly magical. The Maasai people, the only tribe living in the area, have a deep connection with the land and animals that surround the camp. Famous for their cattle, the name ‘Ngorongoro’ refers to the sound that cow bells make as the Maasai cow herds wander around the wilderness – just one of many unique cultural legacies that add to the enchanting atmosphere of the camp.
Accommodation at Sanctuary Ngorongoro
Guest accommodation consists of ten tents, all nestling into the valley woodlands. These are Meru in style – an outer layer of canvas extends over the inner structure to create a shady veranda. This is set with a couple of campaign chairs and a table, as well as a useful washstand. It’s a great spot for tucking into morning coffee and biscuits before starting your safari day! Inside each tent, there’s a comfy double bed or twin beds, bedside tables and lighting, and ample storage furniture. The en-suite facilities are positioned behind curtains to the rear of the tent, and they comprise flush toilet, washbasin with mirror over, and classic bucket shower! Your bucket is filled from outside the cubicle by a designated tent attendant, with water at whatever temperature you require. A hairdryer is supplied, and there are plug points too.
Ngorongoro Crater Camp’s communal lounge, dining room, and bar occupy a tent apiece. In the lounge, dark brown leather sofas and armchairs are positioned around coffee tables. There’s a selection of reading material too, and some wildlife artwork. The dining room contains chic individual tables and upright chairs, and it too features prints of local animals – including a zebra! The bar tent is the most informal of the three tents, with pictures of local animals again and fabric seating. All tents are open fronted, so you can marvel at the views while relaxing and dining. Additionally, some lounge and dining furniture is positioned in the camp’s grounds, providing opportunities for very pleasant al fresco relaxing and eating/drinking! Guests can enjoy a breakfast buffet in camp, or head out with a breakfast picnic. You can request a picnic lunch too, or head back to camp for this meal. Dinner is always served on site, either in the dining tent or at a special outside location.
Experience Sanctuary Ngorongoro
This camp is perfect for that classic, pared-down safari experience. The 12 double tents are set on a slightly elevated area that allows for better views over the dense bush. All are basic but stocked with everything you need and more. You'll find plush mattresses, crisp linens, good lighting, a copper washing basin with running water, bucket shower and toilet. Outside, beneath the canvas overhang, are director chairs and a vanity basin. Thoughtfully, the tents are heated before bedtime.
Three Meru-style tents comprise the small, no-frills main area of Sanctuary – a bar, dining tent and lounge. Although simple structures, the tents are luxuriously decorated with billowing fabric ceilings and white table linens. There are comfortable sofas and ottomans, some choice photographs and a few space heaters for chilly evenings. Outdoors is a brightly cushioned seating area with cosy blankets, and meals are served under cover or at private tables scattered at various viewpoints. The food? Delicious and plentiful.
