Stay at Rekero Camp
Rekero Camp is perfectly located to allow you to experience and explore every corner of the Maasai Mara. Activities focus on truly superb game viewing with internationally renowned guides. Backed by an understanding gained over three generations, Rekero delivers one of Africa’s finest marriages of wildlife, culture and visitors. This success is enhanced by Rekero's strong relationship with our neighbours, a bond that, together with their successes in poverty reduction, has been recognised by some of the world’s leading conservationists. Using tourism to reduce poverty and introduce the benefits of conservation to communities is one of their proudest achievement.
Rekero is an intimate, comfortable and relaxed riverside safari camp where you are enfolded by the surrounding African wilderness. Hippos grunt in the pools below, the smell of wild sage drifts through the air and herds of wildebeest often can be seen crossing the Talek River from the main deck. This blissful location means that fantastic game viewing can continue, even when relaxing in camp. The friendly and highly skilled camp crew have worked together for many years; together with our internationally recognised guiding team, they create a truly insightful safari experience every time.
Accommodation at Rekero Camp
Rekero’s nine spacious tents are laid out along the river’s edge under a network of shady trees. Designed in classic safari style with a fresh, contemporary edge, each tent has an en-suite bathroom with hot-water showers and flushing toilet. To make them even more comfortable, each tent has a large private veranda with an inviting day bed or couch where you can take in a view of the river.
Rekero has two larger family tents with separate bedrooms to accommodate up to five family members. While catering for the individual needs of families, however, safety is always of top priority and the wilderness environment here is not conducive to providing a specific outdoor safari programme for children.
Rekero's delicious home-cooked meals are usually enjoyed communally. The chefs prepare all meals in camp, and bake fresh bread, biscuits and muffins daily. Breakfast is a tempting buffet-style spread – choose from a Continental or a full English breakfast. Light, buffet-style lunches in camp include fresh salads and vegetables with your main course. Alternatively, ask for a picnic breakfast or lunch so you can maximise your time in the bush. Tea and cake at 4pm are a camp tradition. Dinner is a three-course silver service or plated affair.
Experience Rekero Camp
Rekero Camp is quite simply in the best spot for viewing the Great Migration, when vast herds of wildebeest enter Kenya on their long trek through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. Close to the Talek and Mara rivers in the south of the Maasai Mara, Rekero lies in the heart of one of the most game-rich areas the Reserve has to offer, with a remarkable abundance and variety of year-round wildlife and spectacular scenery.
An age-old crossing point on the Talek River is just 150 metres away from our dining area, and the Mara River is an easy drive from camp. It is these mighty rivers that are the greatest obstacles for the hundreds of thousands of wildebeest on their journey north. The currents are strong, the banks are steep and thousands perish in the jaws of massive Nile crocodiles. Crossings are spectacular and frenetic, and provide thrilling game viewing either from a vehicle or when simply relaxing in camp, watching from Rekero’s perfectly placed deck.
Outside migration season, the plains around Rekero are filled with an extraordinary concentration of wildlife, from plains game to large herds of elephant and buffalo – and, of course, predators. Rekero is frequently the base of choice in the Mara for film crews, with past documentaries filmed in the area including the BBC’s Big Cat Diaries and Disney’s African Cats. As well as our resident Rekero lion pride, you could view the neighbouring Marsh pride, famous throughout the world.
